This episode is in response to the many fitting questions and concerns Mallory and Zede receive through the SelfSewn Wardrobe Facebook group. Zede and Mal confront ready to wear garments head on and discuss how these garments really don’t fit most people well which is why many people sew clothes – better fit.
To further fuel this garment making fire there are self sewn clothes and self drafted. Self sewn being clothes that are made from a pattern which you may or may not need to alter to get an even better fit than just the straight out of the envelope pattern. Zede and Mal note that many times they see people become over critical of the clothes they make and try to remove everyone crease and extra bit of fabric. Zede will be the first to tell you – that’s going to make a garment that you can’t move in and is really uncomfortable.
Mal and Zede are both self drafters and share their experience of trying to fit themselves and others with patterns only to be disappointed with the fit or the amount of altering. So why not self draft a master pattern that fits well and to their liking? Well, that’s exactly what they do. This process can be a bit more involved with lots of measurement taking, some math calculations, and plotting/drafting to get the pattern. This process is well worth it in the end when you reap the rewards of a garment that fits you and your shape and makes you feel good.

I recently found your Facebook page, and it is so great. Then I ordered some things, including Thread Heaven, because of your heads up in an email, that led me to your store. Today I started downloading and listening to your podcasts. So great! I guess this is a fan letter 😁. I tried to go to your Sewhere Patreon page, but the link wouldn’t open. I’m so smitten with your podcasts, that I would like to help support them. Is there another way to get there?
Thanks,
Marilyn
Marilyn, I fixed the link!!! Thanks for your order!
I think the trouble with using a pattern is that the end result rarely has any resemblance to the picture on the front of the envelope.
So often, we choose patterns that were never designed for our particular body shape.
